Although recently there has been a move away from tomatoes, traditionally speaking, tomatoes are the common ingredient worldwide for a great tasting pizza. With tomatoes alone, there are so many variations of the 'tomato sauce' that it would be pointless to cover all of them. However, when it comes to which tomato sauce you should use for your pizza - lets cover the basics:
1. Pomodoro sauce - this sauce is purely tomato based and lacks spices.
2. Marinara sauce - spices added into a blend of tomato base to enhanced flavour, often consisting of onions, garlic and oregano. This is the most commonly used sauce for pizzas.
3. Puttanesca sauce - a more robust flavour from the addition of onions, black olives, anchovies and capers mixed with olive oil and added to the tomato base.
